Islanders Card is Coming

As Rocky Mountain Institute points out, a leaky local economy can be improved, and that improves the overall economic conditions of a community.

The San Juan Islands have around fifteen thousand residents, the size of a small town in America. We’re spread out across many islands and we shop off-island as often as we do on island. We love our local businesses and community.

New Bakery on Orcas Island

Ben and Megan have named their new boy child – “Porter” ! Welcome the family to Orcas Island. They’ve opened the “Wild Flour Bakery” on Orcas Island in Eastsound, and while I did produce the video below, I can tell you honestly, the baked goods are excellent. The Almond-Chocolate bear claw this morning was the best I’ve ever had. No hyperbole. Islander prices too!

Best of luck to Ben, Megan and their 3 children as they embark on this fabulous new business and life on Orcas Island.

The isolation of the Islands means community sustainability is always a consideration. As the size of homes have increased, the pressure on the local infrastructure has increased. Local planning, generally driven by private individuals has produced a working system which favors the needs of those participating in the planning process.

Mobile Devices to Overtake PCs This Year

There will be a significant consumer and enterprise shift away from the desktop and laptop PC in favor of mobile devices like smartphones, tablets and netbooks in 2011, according to a new white paper from Deloitte.

“Technology, Media & Telecommunications Predictions 2011? forecasts that out of $815 million which will be spent globally on PC- and non-PC computing devices, $375 million (46%) will be spent on smartphones.

Mobilizing to Meet the Market

Santa Clara, California, April 19, 2011-

According to the latest Quarterly Mobile Phone Shipment and Forecast Report from DisplaySearch, revenue for mobile displays is forecast to grow 47% in 2011 and 19% in 2012-reaching $22.4 billion. Due to a strong Q4’10, 2010 mobile phone display shipments reached 1.6 billion units, up 10.8% Y/Y. Revenues reached $12.8 billion in 2010, up 10.4% Y/Y. Additionally, the 2010 mobile phone display ASP remained at $7.9-the same as in 2009-resulting in remarkable revenue growth. This is due to continuously growing emerging markets and to the smart phone trend, which is pushing demand for higher specifications including display size, resolution and technology.

 

“With mobile phone market growth occurring as a result of continuously growing emerging markets and the transition to smart phones, demand has increased for higher specifications, including display size, resolution, and technology,” noted Calvin Hsieh, Senior Analyst for DisplaySearch. “As a result, DisplaySearch forecasts continued growth for this segment into 2011-reaching 1.8 billion units.”
